In 1778 the Bataviaasch Genootschap voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen or Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences was established in Batavia, now Jakarta. The exclusively male Board of Directors, was selected from among the officials of the colonial government and the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC). Ninety years later, in 1868, the Society opened the Batavia Museum to visitors by appointment only. The historian Katharine McGregor observes that it is unclear whether Indonesians had access to the museum or if access was reserved exclusively to Europeans. The museum had more or less the same function as its colonial counterparts in the Netherlands: to showcase the riches of the colony.

As movements of decolonization sweep across the world, this edition of Wacana seeks to explore Indonesia’s “cultural archive” as outlined by Edward Said (1993) and Gloria Wekker (2016), from a historical perspective and seek to shift the perspective, gaze, and experience towards a decolonial stance in a reconsideration of colonialism and coloniality in Indonesian history.

Universitas Nias Raya, Kamis (02/02/2023), Universitas Nias Raya menerima kunjungan yang luar biasa dari dua peneliti asal Belanda yaitu Gert Jan (antropolog) dari Universitas Utrecht dan Sadiah Boonstra (sejarawan) dengan tujuan hendak mengadakan kolaborasi dalam menemukan makna yang mendalam dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan oleh seorang Antropolog bernama J.P.Kleiweg de Zwaan tentang “The Facial Plaster Casts” di daerah Nias. Penelitian yang dilakukan Kleiweg adalah beliau mencetak beberapa wajah dengan semen dari berbagai daerah yaitu dari Nias, Minangkabau dan Jakarta untuk menemukan teori ras. Read more.

Op 10 maart 2020, de eerste dag van het staatsbezoek aan Indonesië, droeg koning Willem-Alexander in de botanische tuinen in Bogor (het voormalige koloniale Buitenzorg), de Kebun Raya Bogor, de keris (rituele dolk) van de Indonesische verzetsheld prins Diponegoro (1785-1855) over aan president Joko Widodo. De keris was bijna twee eeuwen onvindbaar geweest in een Nederlandse museumcollectie. Dat uitgerekend de botanische tuinen in Bogor werden uitgekozen voor de teruggave van een belangrijk voorwerp van een Indonesische held zegt veel over de betekenis van Kebun Raya Bogor. De tuinen zijn een plek waar geschiedenis, kennis en museumobjecten samenkomen met imperialistische politiek, economie en de esthetiek van planten.

De gedeelde Nederlands-Indonesische geschiedenis houdt de gemoederen flink bezig. Daarbij is te merken dat Nederlandse uitgevers zich meer en meer inspannen om naast (nieuwe) Nederlandse inzichten, interpretaties en perspectieven ook Indonesische te laten klinken. Dat resulteerde afgelopen jaar onder meer in een uitgave van de privébrieven van de eerste premier van Indonesië en in heruitgaven van de beroemde romans van Pramoedya Ananta Toer.

Toen in de 15de en 16de eeuw Portugezen, Spanjaarden en Nederlanders naar de Indonesische archipel voeren, op zoek naar specerijen, had dat gebied al een zeer groot handelsnetwerk. Ook (luxe) goederen, cultuur en religie werden al eeuwenlang via dat netwerk uitgewisseld. Europeanen sloten achter aan in de rij.

Dunia perlahan-lahan keluar dari kebuntuan setelah dua tahun lebih dilanda pandemi. Begitu pula dengan dunia seni yang saat ini telah ramai lagi dengan berbagai aktivitasnya, baik di Indonesia maupun di mancanegara. Yang menarik untuk kita amati, dunia seni pascapandemi ini tak lagi sama seperti sebelumnya. Terasa begitu reflektif dalam proses pemulihannya, dunia seni kini bergerak dengan berani ke arah baru yang kian menantang. Beberapa bulan belakangan ini, pembukaan galeri serta pameran seni begitu menjamur di Ibu Kota maupun di berbagai daerah di tanah air.

Museum MACAN's "Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me", is a major survey exhibition of the work of Agus Suwage, one of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists, who came to prominence in the mid-to-late 1990s. Curated by Museum MACAN Director Aaron Seeto and refracted through intimate and personal narratives, the work in this exhibition addresses sweeping cultural and political themes. The exhibition includes around 80 works, consisting of major installations, sculptures, paintings, and drawings, and explores the development of Agus Suwage’s work in Indonesia’s Reformasi context.

What to do with the dark pages of our history? Over 20 years after the fall of Suharto in 1998, the urgency to revisit the discourse of the anti-communist massacres of 1965-66 continues to exist even though space and freedom has opened up for victims to come forward with their stories.

Aptly titled, Stories Across Rising Lands offers a variety of artist perspectives on the historical and geographical diversity of Southeast Asia. As Museum MACAN’s first-time ever collaboration with an external curator Jeong-ok Jeon, a long-time Jakarta-based curator originating from Korea, the exhibition provides a balanced geographical and topical spread. Eight artists and one artist duo offer unique, historically, socially, politically specific and localized perspectives of lived realities across Southeast Asia.

A timelapse video of a sprouting red bean is accompanied by an Indonesian language voiceover delivered in a soft, fairytale voice : ‘This is about how humans are born, live and die returning to soil. And for the unfortunate ones, to be dug up again before their time to be exhibited to the world as the losers,’ says the narrator with more than a hint of sarcasm.

What might a female writer born in 1981 in Baroda, India have in common with a landscape water colourist born in 1912 in Amoy, China? This is the question Singaporean poet Pooja Nansi asked herself when we invited her to create an artistic response to the exhibition Lim Cheng Hoe: Painting Singapore in early 2018.

Across three weekends in August and September 2017, 11 dancers filled the site of Vietnamese-born Danh Vo’s sculptural installation on the Gallery’s rooftop. It was the first public programme for the inaugural Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series.

Before the holidays we read Paul Doolan’s response to our post with great interest. We appreciate the time and effort Mr Doolan took to reply to our post as we think a fruitful debate will progress knowledge. With this writing we give a final reaction to Mr Doolan and if it is not for knowledge progression, it will at least get Dr Sadiah Boonstra’s name spelled correctly.

Paul Doolan (Zürich International School / University of Konstanz) recently criticized Dutch historians for their failure to decolonize Dutch and colonial history, and suggested the contribution of what he calls ‘outsiders’ as a solution. In doing so, however, he overlooks the fact that there are and have been many initiatives to rewrite Dutch colonial history.

Nu in Nederland, net als elders, de publieke aandacht groeit voor zwarte bladzijden van de geschiedenis, worden pogingen ondernomen onze koloniale geschiedenis te herschrijven. Het boek Roofstaat. Wat iedere Nederlander moet weten van Ewald Vanvugt is daarvan een voorbeeld. Ook Nederlandse musea, als bewaarders van materiële overblijfselen, objecten en kunst, worstelen met de vraag hoe ze met deze pijnlijke geschiedenis kunnen omgaan, zodat we ervan kunnen leren.

Politiek is vaak theater, maar theater is ook politiek. Dat blijkt uit het promotieonderzoek van historica Sadiah Boonstra aan de VU naar de Indonesische Wayang theatervorm, die in 2003 tot Unesco-erfgoed werd uitgeroepen. De eerste beschrijvingen van dit poppentheater stammen uit de koloniale periode. Nederlandse geleerden waren denigrerend en negeerden vermakelijke aspecten, zoals flauwe en grove grappen.
